You can review and grade student submissions from the open grader. If your course is connected to Canvas through the API, grades that are entered in the open grader automatically push through to your Canvas gradebook. Students can access their grades in either place, but if you are providing feedback on specific questions, it's recommended that you do it in ADAPT where students can see your feedback in connection to specific questions.
You can access the open grader from the course page or from the left-hand panel inside an individual assignment. The instructions and screenshots displayed in this section reflect starting from the course page.
Click the checkmark in the Actions column of the assignment in which you're grading. A red checkmark indicates there are ungraded submissions. If an assignment is auto-graded it will have a blue checkmark. The same is true for assignments that have no student submissions yet.
The top section allows you to click a link to review the instructions for the assignment if you need a refresher.
The Filter field defaults to all students, but you can also use this drop-down to filter by ungraded open-ended submissions.
The Question field allows you to choose which question you are grading.
The Student field allows you to grade students in the order in which they appear in the class or you can search for a specific student's name.
The lower section shows the questions and has the fields you will need to apply a grade, including:
The student's submission.
The "Scores" area where you can use the "Full Score" button to apply the total number of points possible or you can enter a score manually. Note that if you click the Full Score button, ADAPT will automatically advance to the next student in your roster.
The Grader Feedback section where you can leave notes for students and optionally upload a feedback file. This section also allows you to create "canned responses" if you know you'll be giving the same type of feedback to multiple students. To apply or create a canned response, you will choose it from the drop-down menu.
Click submit to apply the grade and feedback or submit and next to apply the grade and feedback and move onto the next student in the roster. Note that if you have added a late penalty in the assignment properties, you must submit the score first and then click the button to apply the late penalty. This is described more in the video tutorial below.
If your course is connected to Canvas through the API or LTI, the scores will automatically push through to your Canvas gradebook. These assignments appear with ADAPT in parenthesis.
Go to the next tab to learn about Viewing Auto-Graded Submissions.
Viewing Auto-Graded Submissions
Click the checkmark in the Actions column of the assignment in which you're grading. Since submissions are auto-graded, this checkmark will always appear blue, even if students have completed the assignment.
The top section allows you to click a link to review the instructions for the assignment if you need a refresher.
The Filter field defaults to all students, but you can also use this drop-down to filter by ungraded open-ended submissions if your assignment happens to include both auto-graded and open-ended questions.
The Question field allows you to choose which question you are grading.
The Student field allows you to view the student submissions in the order in which they appear in the class or you can search for a specific student's name.
The lower section shows the question with the answer that was selected by the student. Other areas include:
The auto-graded score received by the student. If the student answered the question incorrectly, but you determine they deserve partial or full credit, you can manually update the score.
The "Submission History" shows details about the submission. This section will have multiple lines if you allow students resubmit answers.
The Grader Feedback section is not applicable to open-ended assessments.
The Submit button is visible, but only needs to be used if you have updated the student's score.
If your course is connected to Canvas through the API or LTI, the scores will automatically push through to your Canvas gradebook. These assignments appear with ADAPT in parenthesis.
