Trailblazer! Risk taker! These are words that describe you – the first in your family to go to college. First-generation or first-gen students are those of us who do not have parents who went to college. As the first in our families to attend college we may feel more freedom in choosing a major, we have a deep appreciation for learning, and we know how to work hard, but there also might be some challenges in facing the unfamiliar in college. You do not have to navigate the system by yourself! Although First-Gen students are resilient and resourceful, it helps to be aware of the resources that support your success as a California Community College student.

Inspired by TRIO Student Support Services, a federal program designed to help students be successful in college and beyond, first-generation students and staff at Moraine Valley Community College tell what it means to be among the first in their family to attend college.
