Oral Hygiene Tips For College Students

College students are often too busy and do not pay enough attention to their oral health. Here are some basic guidelines to follow to ensure proper oral care.

  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day for 2 minutes, moving to different areas of the mouth every 30 seconds. Remember to brush the tongue, under the tongue, roof of the mouth and the gums.

  • It is important to floss at least once a day, especially if going to the dentist is on the back burner because of college. Flossing once a day will clean the spaces between the teeth and gums where your toothbrush can't reach, possibly preventing infection.

  • Rinse your mouth with fluoride mouthwash after eating or drinking. Rinsing your mouth right after brushing will rinse the fluoride off the teeth so it is better to wait a little bit after brushing to rinse with fluoride mouthwash. Rinsing with fluoride mouthwash at least once a day can help prevent tooth decay.

  • Replacing your toothbrush every 3-4 months will help keep all the nooks and crannies cleaner in your mouth. The bristles of a toothbrush get worn and frayed and become less effective at cleaning your mouth.
