Meet Your Instructor
Brianna Kuhn
Hi all! Welcome to our Fall 2018 English course online! My name is Brianna Kuhn, and I will be your instructor for this semester.
I received my Bachelor's in English at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and Master's in English at SDSU and have been teaching English as an adjunct at various San Diego community college campuses since 2014. I currently teach at Mesa, Cuyamaca, and Saddleback both online and in person.
Outside of the classroom, my professional interests lie in professional development opportunities centered around online instruction, equity, and cultural competency. To these aims, I currently sit on the Distance Education committee and Mesa College; attend conferences such as the San Diego Area Writing Project, California Acceleration Project, the Online Teaching Conference, and the National Conference On Race and Ethnicity; and enroll in courses centered around equity and online instruction.
More recently, I have been learning about Open Educational Resources instruction and adoption and am thrilled to offer OER in all of my courses beginning this Fall! I also participate in departmental projects such as Cuyamaca’s Equity Project and Mesa College’s Guinea Pig Project. Both projects involve instructors analyzing their own equity gaps—disaggregated by race and gender—and implementing strategies to reduce these gaps. My focus has been on designing a no-points grading system to promote anti-racist writing assessment. This fall, I will also be starting the EdD program at SDSU where I plan to research ways in which white female instructors can more effectively connect and reach their students of color in the community college classroom.
On a personal note, I currently live in La Mesa with my partner and two adorable cats. I love to play on my coed softball on Thursday nights, take indoor cycling classes, watch sports, and try new restaurants in the San Diego area. I always look forward to having tickets to events such as concerts and sporting events, especially for the Dodgers, Lakers, and Pittsburgh Steelers (my dad is from West Virginia and brought the Steelers with him to our California household so no bandwagon here!).
The pictures (above) are, from the left, me at a Dodger game at Petco Park, my mom and I on the La Jolla Beach Bike Tour, my two kitties cuddling, my dad and I inside the Pittsburgh Steelers locker room, and my coed softball team posing for our championship photo.
I have become highly invested in student equity and helping students move through the English sequence and graduate with their desired degree or certificate. I look forward to working with each of you and getting to know each of you as students and individuals!

I take my role in this class seriously. I'll be checking in on this course daily, and will respond to Inbox messages and emails within 24 hours in most cases.
Within the course, you can expect quick answers to posts in the Q&A--usually within 24 hours. I'll also be active in the discussions, but not leading those discussions. I will not respond to every post, but will provide one-on-one feedback via comments while grading.
Though I hope you will see me as a mentor within this course, we will be working as a team this term to maximize your success. There is never a question too small--don't hesitate to reach out if any questions or concerns arise!

A Look Ahead:
This term, we will utilize various tools to create a sense of community in our course. We will have video discussion boards on FlipGrid, traditional text-based discussions, and peer reviews. The hope is that you will dive in head first and have some FUN engaging with your peers using these user-friendly tools as a bridge to connect with each other.
The material this semesteris sure to challenge, provoke, and engage! We will discover the meaning of single stories and how this concept can be applied to race, gender, socioeconomic status, education level/major, culture, and much more!
This term, PLEASE reach out if you have a question or if you just want to say hi! I am ALWAYS available to you and will ALWAYS respond within 24 hours.
I look forward to seeing you online and working together! Feel free to email me at bkuhn@saddleback.edu or message me through Canvas conversations if you have any questions!
