Course Description

This course is designed to teach computer users how to develop electronic spreadsheets using spreadsheet software such as Microsoft Excel, to solve business related quantitative problems. Topics of instruction include data entry, formulas, functions, charts, macros, and other beginning to intermediate level features of spreadsheet software. BEFORE ENROLLING: Students should be able to save and retrieve files and perform other basic file management tasks on the computer. (CSU, AVC)

Course Objectives

At the completion of the course the successful student will:

  1. *Describe and explain the purpose of electronic spreadsheets in a business or financial environment.
  2. *Utilize spreadsheet software to enter, format, edit, and manipulate text and numerical data.
  3. *Design and develop spreadsheets using formulas and functions to solve quantitative problems.
  4. *Utilize spreadsheet software to manage multiple worksheets and workbooks.
  5. *Design and develop spreadsheets to conduct what-if analysis.
  6. *Utilize spreadsheet software to create charts and graphs, including sparklines and data bars.
  7. *Incorporate the use of tables, PivotTables, and PivotCharts to filter and analyze quantitative data.
  8. *Design and develop spreadsheet applications, including the use of macros.

Student Learning Outcomes (SLO)

Expected student-learning outcomes for this course are as follows.

  1. Students will plan, develop, and format electronic spreadsheets utilizing formulas and functions to manage financial data in a business environment.
  2. Students will plan, develop, and format electronic spreadsheets utilizing charts and what-if analysis tools to manage financial data in a business environment.
