Socrates: What is Philosophy?

Overview:

Philosophy is literally the love of wisdom. The first philosopher we will encounter in this class is the ancient Greek philosopher Socrates, a lover of wisdom.

Throughout this course we will focus on the following areas of philosophy:

Epistemology: The study of knowledge  

Metaphysics: The study of the nature of reality

Philosophy of Religion: The study of religious beliefs

Ethics: The study of right and wrong

 

 

Objectives:

  • Explain the trial of Socrates.
  • Analyze the arguments put forth by Socrates.
  • Debate the ideas presented by Socrates.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of what philosophy is like.
