Artificial Intelligence

Overview:

This week's reading is by John Searle, a well-known figure in philosophy of mind. Searle argues against, among other things, the strong AI thesis - a level of artificial intelligence that equals human intelligence, including consciousness. In this week's reading, think about whether a computer could have a mind like we do. Could a computer or a robot for that matter have mental states, hopes dreams and fears, just like us?

Objectives:

After this module, you should be able to:

  • Explain Searle's Chinese Room thought experiment.
  • Analyze the arguments put forth by Searle.
  • Debate the ideas presented by Searle.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the arguments for and against artificial intelligence.
  • Communicate ideas in the video and reading to your classmates.
