Why are Online Student Services important?

California Community Colleges, California Virtual Campus - Online Education Initiative

According to the 2017 California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office Distance Education Report, "With the increasing number of distance education students and the development and expansion of courses and programs, colleges face new challenges to provide student services and other support in the online learning environment. This challenge is not limited to distance education students. Traditional students on campus also need the option to access student services without having to come to campus."

Nearly 27% of California Community College students will take a distance education course this year and 51% of our colleges offer certificates and degrees that can be earned without stepping onto campus for classes. It is important to remember that student support goes beyond instruction, it requires creating a space where students feel connected, supported and understood. In an effort to close the equity gap in distance education, the CVC-OEI strives to develop innovative online resources to support existing CCC distance education programs.

Let's talk about Student Services. It is extremely important that students are able to access Online Services to include Counseling, Online Mental Health Services, Admissions, Financial Aid and more in the online environment. Our goal is to make sure students have access to student services in the online environment the same way they would have access to on-campus services. How can your campus guarantee that both distance education students and traditional students have access to fully resourced student services?

The CVC-OEI in partnership with ConexEd Cranium Cafe platform provides high quality and innovative tools and resources to effectively serve students in the online environment.

As the California Community Colleges continue to develop inclusive online student support services, the CVC-OEI is here to support existing distance education programs. If you are interested in implementing fully resourced online student services at your campus, please connect with our team.
