Committees/Groups/Departments/Offices on Campuses that DECs Must Know

The committees and groups that are important to a Distance Education Coordinator are highly variable. Some colleges actually have a distance education committee or a subcommittee of another committee that focuses on DE. Some colleges that have an information technology committee route their DE issues through this body. An enrollment management type of committee could be an important committee for the DEC to be involved with.

In addition to committees, certain departments or offices will be important points of contact for the DEC. Information technology departments are often involved with DE, as is the library. The college tutoring or learning center would be an important point of contact for the DEC . The DEC may need to coordinate with the campus disability resource office for assistance with accessibility. The DEC may need the assistance of the institutional research office for submitting reports or conducting surveys.

These are just some examples of typical offices, departments, or committees that a DEC should be familiar with. A new DEC should familiarize her/himself with the college culture and organization, to get a feel for where he/she fits into the scheme of things.
