Los Medanos

Here is the language of our resolution supporting OER. It was first passed by our Student Senate, and then affirmed and passed in our Academic Senate, as well. Shout out to my partner in the OER work at LMC, Professor Edward Haven! He helped draft and pass the resolution, and was the leader on our ZTC Phase II Grant.
A RESOLUTION OF THE LOS MEDANOS COLLEGE ASSOCIATED STUDENTS TO PROMOTE COLLEGE FUNDING FOR OPEN EDUCATION RESOURCES INITIATIVE.
WHEREAS: The Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC) or Open Education Resources (OER) initiative promotes the overall role that community colleges serve, which is to provide access to affordable education, and
WHEREAS: free access to educational resources is imperative to student learning success, and,
WHEREAS: We recognize that students at Los Medanos College are highly affected by current textbook costs and believe the Zero Textbook Initiative would be an effective way to diminish this issue, and,
WHEREAS: The student body strongly urges the removal of textbook costs for all classes across the college; with priority for general education (GE) courses, and,
WHEREAS: It is imperative that faculty play a role to promote the success of this Initiative, and,
WHEREAS: We would like to see faculty-led resolution to this issue, and,
WHEREAS: On behalf of the student body, we promote college funding for the Open Education
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, on this 19th day of March, 2018, the Los Medanos College Associated Students is requesting that the college integrates the Open Education Resources initiative at Los Medanos College by promoting faculty-led resolution, as well as, providing funding.
Butte College:
Whereas, The significant rise in costs of textbooks is a barrier to college attendance, student access, and student success;
Whereas, Many colleges are interested in reducing the cost of textbooks to increase student access to necessary course materials; and
Whereas, The intent of the College Textbook Affordability Act of 2015 (AB 798, Bonilla, 2015) is to reduce costs for college students by encouraging faculty to accelerate the adoption of lower cost, high-quality, open educational resources (OER);
Resolved, That the Academic Senate of Butte College support efforts to increase student access to high-quality open educational resources and reduce the cost of textbooks and supplies for students in course sections for which open educational resources are to be adopted to accomplish cost savings for students.
