Tying It Together: Module 2 Summary

Congratulations! You just completed Module 2!

We are at the end of our course. Let's tie everything we've learned together from this module.

In this learning module, you learned about:

  • Identify students in need of mental health services.
    • Academic counselors may observe behaviors that could indicate underlying mental health issues (excessive procrastination, poor class attendance, disruptive behavior in the classroom, and/or marked changes in appearance) or students may self-report their own concerns about their behavior.
  • Demonstrate effective mental health referrals
    • Ask open-ended and direct questions.
    • Utilize the Patient Health Questionnaire 2 assessment tool.
    • Explain available referral options, address student's concerns, and help student make a decision.
    • Connect student with referral.
  • Identify local, statewide, and national mental health resources
    • Due to the prevalence of college students reporting mental health issues, it is imperative that academic counselors equip themselves to effectively refer students to the appropriate on and off campus resources.
    • Bookmark local, statewide, and national mental health resources.

To demonstrate your learning you completed the following assessments and activities:

  • Completed “Mental Health Counseling Referral: Role Play” Activity in Cranium Cafe with a fellow classmate.
  • Read about Providing effective mental health referrals.
  • Read about mental health resources.
  • Participated in “Local & Statewide Resources” Discussion.
  • Participated in “Instructor Led Session 2 of 2” Learning Activity.
  • Completed the “Post-Knowledge Survey.”
