This portion of the boot camp will cover the basic steps to setting up course content in your Canvas shells. My name is Laurie Green and I the Program Director for EMT at Crafton Hills College. The content in this section is based on the most frequently asked questions I receive from faculty regarding course set up and adjustments. If you have something in particular that you would like covered let me know in advance of our September 11th meeting at 1pm https://cccconfer.zoom.us/j/9092605488 Links to an external site. . I can be reached at lgreen@craftonhills.edu
You can also start a discussion board on any of the topics covered in this section or if you have a specific Canvas question. You can follow the instructions below on how to access the "Canvas 101" discussion board for this boot camp. The assignments are optional but definitely in your best interest to explore. If you upload an assignment I can go over specific questions you may have about content or walk you through the steps to adding/deleting content.
THE BASICS
You may already be working with CANVAS at your institution. If not, here is a brief summary of what Canvas is. This is a Learning Management System (LMS) that can be used to enhance a face to face course, support the didactic instruction of a hybrid course, or be the full instructional platform of an online course. This system offers a student the ability to access the instructor, other students, and course information in one location. If you look at the left hand side of your screen you will see all of the basic functions available to you in a Canvas Sandbox. Your institution may have additional features such as "UDOIT", "PRONTO", "PROCTORIO", "STUDIO", "PORTFOLIO", etc. I recommend looking at your campus CANVAS structure to see the full access capability you have. The video below will explain the basic feature of the CANVAS LMS. If you have any questions post them to the Canvas discussion board accessible below in the blue link titled "Canvas 101"
HOW TO COPY A COURSE TO YOUR CANVAS SHELL
Copying a course can be a daunting task, but it does not have to be. I will show you two ways to course copy material into your Canvas shell. In the video below we will cover the basic step of adding content and some does and donts to content manipulation. Some of the concepts covered include:
- How to Copy an Existing Canvas Course
- How to Copy a Course from Commons
- How to Select Specific Content
- How to Adjust Settings in Your Canvas Shell
Watch the following video for a tutorial on the above course content. If you have any questions regarding the information email the Laurie Green at: lgreen@craftonhills.edu
HOW TO ADJUST KEY SETTINGS IN YOUR CANVAS SHELL
This section will cover the basic setting features in Canvas to help you and your students access important information in a timely manner. We will discuss:
- Primary Course Settings
- How to add alternative emails for notifications
- Adjusting Alerts and Notification
- Setting a Course Picture
- Setting up a Profile
SETTING UP A MODULE WITH COURSE CONTENT
This will be the larger content area within this advanced boot camp module. In this section I will show you how to set up a module within Canvas with course content. We will only be looking at the set up of one module and not a complete course. Within the module we will explore the differences and how to set up:
- Pages
- Assignments
- Discussion Boards
- Announcements
- Zoom Meetings
- Quizzes
The following video will show the basic steps to set up content within a module. This will include how to assign quizzes to a class and an individual. How to set up due dates and submission allowances for assignments. How to embed and develop a discussion board.

ASSIGNMENT FOR THIS SECTION
For this section you will be creating a Canvas quiz in your course sandbox or on a shell you are currently using. If you do not have a current Canvas shell, create a sandbox at Instructure.com
Once you create your quiz upload it to the course assignment link provided below. We will go over the assignment during our zoom session. You can always ask me questions in advance of our official 9/11 meeting by posting to the discussion board below or emailing me at lgreen@craftonhills.edu
DO YOU HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS COURSE??
Should you need additional assistance as part of this course please go to the following discussion board and post your question. Within this discussion are alternative ways for you to contact the instructor directly. Simply click on the picture or the hyperlink below:
(Click the picture or the link "Canvas 101" below to access the group discussion board)
These are both features that you can integrate into your classroom pages. Statistically students respond favorably to click pictures or tabs in order to get them to assignments. When a student opens up a module and sees all of the content it can be overwhelming. Tabs and picture one click items help to minimize the confusion and frustration of users.
