Welcome

Welcome faculty!!  I am excited that you are here to learn more about educating students in healthcare programs.  My name is Julie Holt and I have been teaching nursing students for over 20 years and can't wait to share some tips and ideas to support you all!  Through the next 3 modules, we will explore a deeper dive into helping students reach their goals in your courses and your program.  Healthcare programs are challenging for students- so how do we inspire, guide and motivate students?  For this module we will be taking a deep dive into Clinical Decision Making as a very important content thread tha can support all levels of teaching in nursing.

Objectives

  • Review the framework for a Community of Inquiry
  • Determine the definition of clinical reasoning and clinical decision-making
  • Outline Teaching tools for implementing clinical reasoning in the classroom/clinical environment
  • Review strategies for implementing evidenced-based practice into the curriculum.

Thinking Ahead, Thinking in Action and Thinking Back

Thinking Ahead, thinking in Action and Thinking Back in the clinical space is the ultimate goal for our graduates.  Clinical Decision making is a broad concept that has many components and steps.  We will review  these components and steps as well as explore how to implement strategies in your classroom to get to  "Thinking in Action".  The video below illustrates this idea of this process.  It reviews some great concepts of critical thinking, reflective thinking and problem solving and applies clinical constructs  based on Kelly Ann Crawford.

Let's Link it up --Clinical Judgement and Concept Mapping-

Please pre-read this white paper that is an overview of clinical judgement.  It is a nursing focus, but these concepts can be transferred to any specialty.

As you read, consider these questions- What is a cue?    Think back to your first days in the clinical setting: How did you learn to "cluster cues" as a new health care provider?  How do you think you "cluster cues" in your clinical world while you care for patients and how do you describe this process out loud?
