Welcome to our next module-  Unfolding Case Studies

You are doing great!!!  I know this mid-semester time is so exhausting right now, but keep up hope a break is coming soon. That is the beauty of teaching!  With clinical decision making being our foundation, we are going to take a deeper dive into how case studies, presented in different formats, can help students master their own autonomy and confidence in making those "Thinking in Action"  moments.  The idea of unfolding a patient situation or a scenario provides a vehicle for students to get the idea of "Thinking Ahead".   The pace of the case study/scenario can be slowed for those really challenging concepts or for students experiencing that first week in your clinical lab or classroom.  We will explore virtual scenario formats, simulation formats (home versions, low fidelity & high fidelity) and super low-tech,  paper and pencil formats.

Objectives

  • Review concepts and benefits to students of unfolding case studies in relation to the larger framework of clinical decision-making
  • Connect learning styles to how students engage with unfolding case studies and collaborative work
  • Explore various formats for the unfolding case study-  low-tech, virtual, low/high fidelity
  • Apply principles of pre-work, student behaviors inside the scenario and reflective activities
  • Incorporate the PEARLS debriefing tool for all types of unfolding case studies
