Welcome to Best Practices for Alternative Clinical Experiences

Now that we have really had a chance to experience clinical decision making, we will now move on to how do we apply these global goals to different clinical experiences.  As educators, we are always trying to be innovative to stay current with practice standards and to pivot with our clinical partners.  Whether it is a JAHCO visit or clinical displacement due to a pandemic, we are challenged with continuing to educate students to be safe health care providers.  So, here are some ideas to help build your tool kit and to see opportunities in new areas.

Objectives

  • Apply standards outlined in your program accrediting body and program philosophies/policies to evaluate a clinical experience.
  • Align clinical experience with course student learning outcomes based standard of practice and evidenced-based approach.
  • Investigate and create new opportunities by connecting with community organizations, community clinics, and alternatives to the traditional hospital space for clinical.
  • Review Telehealth modules and integrate into a clinical assignment.
