2. Students Should Meet With Their Academic Counselor
Most likely, your student is considering several different colleges/universities for transfer because of how competitive admission can be in healthcare programs.
It is important to direct students to their academic counselor to discuss all their options. I normally encourage students to meet at least once per semester with their counselor to make sure they are still on track and to modify their plan depending on the student's progress.
At the CCC, the student's counselor is most likely going to use ASSIST.ORG Links to an external site. to find out which courses are required to transfer to a Cal State or UC campus. For students interested in transferring to a private or out-of-state university, her counselor will most likely have to research each campus program and use articulation agreements such as with Loma Linda University Links to an external site..
Here are discussion topics with a counselor:
- How's my progress towards my transfer goal?
- Will I meet the minimum units to transfer to XXX University?
- What classes do I have left to take to make me a competitive student for admission?
- Do I qualify for an associate degree?
- When do I begin the application process?
CCC have different counseling programs that specialize in helping specific populations of students. For example:
- General Counseling is open to all students
- Transfer Center specializes in transfer and open to all students
- Disabled Student Services for students with physical and learning disabilities
- EOPS for 1st generation & low income students
- CARE for single parents
- CalWORKs for students receiving cash aid assistance
- Foster Youth for former or current foster students
- STEM/MESA Program
- Culturally based programs such as PUENTE or Umoja
