Four Step Process

Record - Host - Caption - Embed

How to Record Videos for Students

At the most basic level there are four overall steps for recording videos for students. We'll cover each of these steps in the pages of this module that follow.

  1. Record: You'll be hitting a record button to create a video file on the device that you're using to record (phone, laptop, desktop, etc). Remember, the tool you use to record is influenced by the goal of your video.
  2. Publish to Hosting Site: You'll need to share that video by uploading the file to a video hosting site. This is called publishing the video. There are many video hosting sites. YouTube is, by far, the most popular. Others include 3C Media Solutions (a CCC homegrown solution) and Canvas Studio (a premium tool that many colleges have adopted).
  3. Caption: The next step is to caption your video, or to edit the automated captions. Captions ensure those who cannot access the sound of your video can still understand its content. Captions are required on all instructional videos by law to ensure access for students with disabilities, but captions are helpful to everyone for different reasons.
  4. Embed: Almost all of the time, you will embed your video in your Canvas course.  For the Humanizing Challenge, you'll be embedding your video in your Liquid Syllabus (which you'll create next). A cool thing about digital video is that you can embed a single video in more than one place!
