A11 - Learner Feedback Survey
ALIGNED: Learners have the opportunity to give anonymous feedback to the instructor regarding course design and/or course content at the end of the course.
It may be a little scary but feedback is useful to all of us.
In a face-to-face environment, it's relatively easy for students to provide feedback (if only through their facial expressions and body language!). In an online course, we need to be more intentional about giving students the opportunity to let us know what they think about things like the course design, the workload, and our effectiveness.
If you ask the right questions and give students the time and encouragement to supply quality answers, student feedback can make you and your course better. You may be surprised (and delighted) by what you learn. =-)
It's natural to react a bit defensively to criticism, but it won’t help you improve anything. Give yourself some time to let a possibly charged comment percolate and resolve to calmly and constructively address it, in whatever way might be appropriate. And don't forget to savor the positive comments (there will undoubtedly be some). Use them to identify what you're doing right. . .and then do more of that.
Item A11 asks instructors to place a feedback survey at the end of the course so students are able to comment on all aspects of the course. This means students are "paying it forward" since their feedback won't be implemented while they're in the course. For that reason, you may want to include a mini-survey at the midway point as well.
So you don't have to reinvent the wheel, we've developed three versions of an anonymous survey using Likert-style and short answer questions. Each is already set up as a 10-point ungraded anonymous survey.
- A11 - Anonymous Graded Survey - All Likert Style
- A11 - Anonymous Graded Survey - Mixed Questions
- A11 - Anonymous Graded Survey - All Short Answer
You can download your preferred survey (or all of them!) from the Commons using the search term shown at the bottom of each set of questions. Edit them in any way you wish.
If you just want to see the questions, click each tab below.
Short Answer
- What do you wish I knew about this class that would make me a better teacher?
- Did I make it clear what was expected of you, both in general and for individual assignments? Were the instructions for activities understandable?
- What did you like or not like about how the course material was organized?
- Was there anything about the course that made it difficult for you or inhibited your learning? (For example, the way the course was set up, the types of materials used, the level of content. . .)
- Did you feel there was a good balance between instruction and practice/application? (Examples to support your "yes" or "no" would be really helpful to me.)
- How helpful was I? Did you feel comfortable letting me know when you had a question or were challenged by the material?
- Did you find my feedback on assignments useful (consider things like amount, relevance, positive tone)?
- What habit would you suggest I work on improving to be a better teacher in the future?
- What comments can you offer to help me make this a better course?
- Name one small thing I can do to be an amazing instructor.

Where to Look
Alignment calls for the survey to be present at the end of the course so look in the final module. If a survey is included earlier in the course as well, that's evidence for an Exemplary rating.
What to Look For
A survey (with or without points) set up to be submitted anonymously. Some instructors use SurveyMonkey, EvaluationKit or another platform outside of Canvas.
