C6 - Assessment Instructions
ALIGNED: Instructions clearly explain to students how to successfully complete the assessments.
NOTE: This element is specific to instructions for assessments (as opposed to A9 which covered instructions for supplemental content).
Instructions are like a map to help students meet your expectations with ease. These instructions should both explain the purpose of the assessment and provide step-by-step directions for successfully completing and submitting the assignment. Let student know things like whether a quiz is timed, how long the essay should be, if multiple submissions/attempts are allowed, etc. Ideally, you’ll also make an explicit connection between what’s being assessed and your learning goals.
Make it clear how students can successfully complete and submit the assessment and, ideally, let them know when and where they can expect feedback.
Here are two examples:
We've created example Assignment and Discussion templates if you'd like to use either as a starting point for writing clear instructions.
NOTE: Not sure why but the actual template won't always display in Commons the first time you click the link. Try clicking it a second time.
Where to Look
These instructions should be found in assignments, activities and discussions.
What to Look For
Look for clarity and thoroughness of instructions. Are students told everything they need to know to be most successful with the assessment?
