1.7 Connecting ADAPT to Canvas via LTI and API

Canvas Administrative Setup

ADAPT can connect to your college's Canvas instance through a limited LTI (learning tool interoperability) or a much more robust API+LTI (application programming interface) connection. An API+LTI connection is far superior because it seamlessly connects an ADAPT course to your Canvas course, which will automatically create individual Canvas assignments and gradebook entries. If an ADAPT assignment is auto-graded, the grade passes straight through to your Canvas gradebook. The LTI alone requires you to manually connect and configure ADAPT and Canvas for each individual assignment.

You should follow your college's processes to request API integration. Your college's Canvas administrator will be familiar with this process. Refer them to "Coupling ADAPT to Canvas via LTI and API Links to an external site." and instruct them to enter a support ticket Links to an external site. to submit the needed information from your college's instance of Canvas. Linking an ADAPT Course to Canvas via API

Once the API+LTI connection is established, linking an ADAPT course to a Canvas course is simple:

  1. In ADAPT, find the course you want to connect and open the course properties.
  2. Under General Information, scroll to the bottom and click Yes next to the LMS option and save.
  3. Back on the front page of the assignment, you will now see a blue box indicating the course is being "served through" to your LMS. In the drop-down menu, select the Canvas course you want to connect to this ADAPT course.
  4. The link will begin to process. This may take a few seconds if there are several assignments in the course. Once the assignments are linked, you will get a message indicating it was a success. Click OK.
  5. The assignments now appear in the Assignments area of the Canvas course you selected in step 3. The (ADAPT) notation indicates they are linked to ADAPT.
  6. The assignments also appear in your Canvas Gradebook.

LTI Connection to Canvas

If your college is using the LTI alone, you are strongly encouraged to push for greater access. This is because it will create tedious work for faculty who must manually connect each assignment to their Canvas course, However, if the LTI is your only option, refer to this LibreTexts Insight article: Coupling ADAPT to Canvas via LTI only Links to an external site., which describes the process for connecting courses and assignments.
