Analyzing Adichie
Assignment Objectives
Demonstrate that you can accurately identify rhetorical strategies and thoroughly analyze their effectiveness in persuading Adichie's audience of her argument that single stories are dangerous.
Instructions
PART 1: Discussing Adichie
Now that you have watched Adichie’s “The Danger of a Single Story,” I would like you to reflect on Adichie’s points and begin analyzing her use of rhetoric. Answer the following questions. Please number your responses from 1-5.
- Give two examples from her Ted Talk in which Adichie misjudged a person or a culture. Remember to properly cite: “quote” (Adichie).
- Give two examples from her Ted Talk in which Adichie herself was misjudged. Remember to properly cite: “quote” (Adichie).
- What, according to Adichie, is a “single story”? Why does she say that these single stories are “dangerous?” Answer in at least 100 words using specific ideas from her talk. Remember to properly cite: “quote” (Adichie).
- Describe a moment in your life where you either misjudged someone or someone misjudged you. What from Adichie’s talk can you apply to your story? Answer in at least 100 words.
- Similar to our Advertising Discussion from this week, discuss the use of two different rhetorical strategies that Adichie uses, and compose one paragraph for each strategy. These can become two body paragraphs in your essay, so work hard on these! You will receive feedback from two peers and me!
- In the topic sentence: Identify and explain which rhetorical strategy you have found, and be sure to name it by its name from our Rhetorical Strategy Lecture
- Discuss how it is presented in Adichie’s speech--meaning, include an example from her speech where you see the strategy being used. Remember to properly cite: “quote” (Adichie).
- Discuss how the rhetorical strategy is effective in convincing her intended audience of her argument. For example, if she uses narration, how does the storytelling persuade her audience of her argument? This part should be at least 4 sentences.
- Refer to the sample outline in this week's module for additional clarification on outlining and structuring your paragraph.
PART 2: Peer Responses
Once you have written your paragraph, you are to critique two of your peers' paragraphs in at least 150 words each. Critique two posts that have yet to be critiqued by a classmate. If everyone's post has been critiqued, evaluate the ones with the least amount of critiques. For example, if every student has at least one critique, then evaluate the students who only have one or two critiques instead of those who have 5 or 6 already.
In order to critique a peer, you must first write your own paragraph. You will only be able to see your classmates' work after you have submitted your own post.
To reply to a peer, click "Reply" under their post, type your reply in the text box and click "Post Reply."
