Numbered Responses (1-4)
PART 1: Responding to Hidden Figures
Answer all of the following questions:
- What single stories are the three main female characters fighting against? Provide examples for each of the three main characters Catherine, Dorothy, and Mary. How are they fighting against traditional gender roles? What does each character do in order to excel in their respective fields?
- When did you notice other people standing up for Dorothy, Katherine, and Mary? Why was it important for them to have male allies (supporters) and white allies?
- How has the experience of women and people of color working in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) changed since the 1960s? What kinds of jobs do you think were usually available to women then? Was it the same for white women and women of color?
- Why do you think it took until 2017 for Hidden Figures to come out when these women were working for NASA in the 1960s? Are women still fighting a similar fight today or have women been granted their equal rights today? Explain your reasoning.
- After reading the gender wage gap articles, choose at least one statistic from the articles and explain its relevance to the film Hidden Figures. In other words, how does your chosen statistic illustrate, clarify, complicate, extend, or challenge something in the film?
PART 2: Responding to your peers
Once you have written your paragraph, you are to critique two of your peers' paragraphs in at least 150 words each. Critique two posts that have yet to be critiqued by a classmate. If everyone's post has been critiqued, evaluate the ones with the least amount of critiques. For example, if every student has at least one critique, then evaluate the students who only have one or two critiques instead of those who have 5 or 6 already.
In order to critique a peer, you must first write your own paragraph. You will only be able to see your classmates' work after you have submitted your own post.
To reply to a peer, click "Reply" under their post, type your reply in the text box and click "Post Reply."
