Analyzing Advertisements
Assignment Objectives
Demonstrate that you can accurately identify rhetorical strategies and thoroughly analyze their effectiveness in persuading the consumer to purchase the product.
Instructions
Step 1: Watch, Choose, and Analyze your ad
This assignment is designed to model how you will construct your body paragraphs for Essay 1.
First, watch all of the ads below. Then, you will choose ONE for your video response for this week.
Instructions for your post: In 90 seconds to 2 minutes, compose a video response which identifies a rhetorical strategy from ONE of the advertisements below. Your response should:
- Identify and explain which rhetorical strategy you have found, and be sure to name it by its name from our Rhetorical Strategy Lecture
- Discuss how it is presented in the advertisement--meaning, include an example from the ad where you see the strategy being used
- Discuss how the rhetorical strategy is effective in convincing the consumer to buy the product. For example, if the ad uses narration, how does the storytelling get the consumer to purchase the product?
- Refer to the sample outline in this week's module for additional clarification on structuring your response

- Use the big green plus button to record your own post by Saturday
- Then reply to at least two of your peers by Sunday (see peer response instructions below).
- Once you record, snap a quick pic of yourself and add stickers!
Step 3: Peer Responses
Once you have submitted your video post, you are to critique two of your peers' paragraphs by submitting a video response. Critique two posts that have yet to be critiqued by a classmate. If everyone's post has been critiqued, evaluate the ones with the least amount of critiques. For example, if every student has at least one critique, then evaluate the students who only have one or two critiques instead of those who have 5 or 6 already.
