Responding to Child's Frustration

In this 1-minute video, an infant on the floor becomes frustrated while attempting to push himself up. He looks to the adults in the room for support, showing emergent emotional self-regulation skills. An educator responds verbally then assists him, offering a toy, then repositioning him to a sitting position and remaining nearby, providing continued support.

Ways To Use

  • Use the video clip as an example of tummy time, ask students how much time do we allow child to vocalize frustrations before intervening. Assign students to research article on tummy time and develop guidelines based on research.  Ask students to take cultural differences into consideration
  • Activity: Have students observe interaction style of teacher as they respond to the child’s cues.  
    • Alternative to teacher, have students identify the Baumrind’s parenting style
  • Discussion what would you do? Discuss your feelings about what the teacher does to respond to the child’s frustration.
