Onlooker Play

Two children play with gears simultaneously without speaking to each other. Example of parallel play. Another child looks on and speaks to one of the children toward the end of the video clip.  45 seconds

Ways To Use

  • Video can be used to practice observation skills.

  • Use video as quiz question: Watch video and determine what stage of Parten Stages of Play is observed.

  • Discussion:  How can teachers support dual language learners during play?

  • Class activity:  provide students with the Parten Stages of Play and have groups act them out and the rest of the class can guess which stage of play.

     

  • Discussion: how would you engage the child watching and why? What is the benefit and detriment in onlooker play? Explain your answer.
