Committee Appointment Model Activity, Resources, and Tools
What MODEL ACTIVITY could we use?
Below is an example of one activity you may use or tailor to your local campus or district to begin a APPOINTMENT PROCESS for equity, diversity, and inclusion in hiring committees:
Committee Appointment Practices
- Develop a clear process with your academic senate or governance body/committee
- Review and discuss the following in at least two meetings or agendized items/readings:
- What is our process for appointing to hiring committees?
- How does our process reflect meeting the needs of your students?
- Is there an effort to create a diverse committee in our process?
- Is our process a "past practice" or is it codified in a clear policy?
- Create a set of standards for committee appointments based on equity-minded frameworks and the college mission and values
- Use these established Standards for Committee Appointments to select diverse, equity-minded members. Remember no targeted quotas can be used
- Consider placing membership lists on senate or governance body/committee agendas as consent items or in notification sections for transparency and accountability
