Post Hiring Model Activity, Resources, and Tools

What MODEL ACTIVITY could we use?

Below is an example of one activity you may use or tailor to your local campus or district to begin a POST HIRING PROCESS for equity, diversity, and inclusion :

New Faculty Academy

  1. Create a new faculty academy as a year-long professional development experience for all newly-hired faculty
  2. Hold weekly or regular meetings
  3. Design competencies and goals:
    • Demystify college processes, including but not limited to
      • tenure process
      • professional review teams
      • college specific processes (e.g., how do I get money to travel to a conference)
    • Scaffold future leaders
      • Describe institutional roles and responsibilities on California Community College campuses with a focus on career path and fostering mentoring relationships
      • Invite administrators and other campus leaders to speak (e.g., administrators: what does the Vice President of Student Service do and how did they get there?; academic senate: how does getting involved in local and state senate help change the system?)
    • Review equity-minded pedagogy
      • Provide research and literature on equity-minded and culturally-responsive pedagogy
      • Develop a book/article club to explore topics of systemic oppression in higher education and formulate best practices
      • Suggested readings might include Culturally Responsive Teaching & Brain by Zaretta L. Hammond,  Teaching Men of Color in the Community College: A Guidebook by J. Luke Wood, Frank Harris III and Khalid White, various publications from the Center for Urban Education
  4. Complete a comprehensive review of the experiences of faculty of color on your campus to track who is getting tenure and exit interviews on why faculty of color may be leaving before tenure or retirement.
