Equity Framework

Equity work is about removing barriers, especially for minoritized populations. As the California Community College system meaningfully works toward increasing faculty diversification, it is critical that all aspects of the search and hiring process are examined with an equity lens. Lara (2019) Links to an external site. stated, "Colleges need to acknowledge that in order to achieve the outcome of increased faculty diversity, they must approach the task with equity-mindedness. That principle is first and foremost."

The following equity framework is based on the components of equity-mindedness introduced by the Center for Urban Education at the University of Southern California Links to an external site.:

I.  Evidence based - Regular review of disaggregated data to inform change

II.  Race-conscious - Critical and reflective of color-evasive ideology

III.  Institutionally focused - Reflective and proactive, seeking institutional solutions

IV.  Systemically aware - Critical of institutional structures that perpetuate bias

V.  Equity advancing - Willing to assess own practice and accountable to closing

This equity framework undergirds ASCCC's proposed Model Hiring processes, principles, guiding questions, resources, and tools.  Each model hiring process is mapped and aligned to one or more of the components of the equity framework.
