9/25 Exam Software: Studio, ProctorU, Proctorio

WELCOME     RECORDING Links to an external site.

This part of the advanced boot camp will look at some alternative teaching strategies in technology. The first part of this session will look at test integrity platforms. We do not have access to these platforms in this Canvas shell so we will discuss and explore them further at our September 25th meeting. The information below covers the basic information for both Proctorio and ProctorU.

In the second part of this session we will discuss and walk through a tutorial on how to set up a Studio video, embed a quiz in the same video, and add it to your course content. The assignment is optional but if you have never worked with Studio this assignment is a great learning opportunity. If you upload a video we can discuss the content, any issues you may have had, and I can assist you with the layout and upload. Feel free to start a discussion topic on any of the items in this section. There are instructions below on how to access the discussion board for this section of the bootcamp.

WHAT ARE WE LEARNING ABOUT?

The following are advanced technology platforms that you may want to integrate into your Canvas classes. The ability to add these items to your course is dependent on what your campus has purchased. Some campuses will not have access to the products discussed in this chapter. If you like the products and content you will want to have further discussions with your department chair, dean, and technology departments on the steps necessary to adopt the programs.

The technology we will cover in this section are utilized to enhance the integrity of the remote test taking process. Many disciplines are governed by outside accrediting authorities that require a minimum hour participation and course competencies. These platforms allow the instructor to monitor student conduct and performance. These test monitoring platforms often require that students have access to a laptop, tablet, or desktop computer. Proctorio for example, will not let students register from a phone or take the test from that device. This can be a complication for some of our students, since they do not have the funds to purchase additional technological supplies. Some campuses have funds or equipment available to assist students in a remote learning environment. If you implement this technology into your program, make sure you have an option available for student access.

Proctorio and ProctorU are classroom integration that are specifically designed to monitor individual students in the test taking environment. Traditionally students would have to set up a time to be monitored in person on campus or at a testing site such as Pearson View to take a major exam. This technology allows multiple students to take an exam in their primary class (similar to being on campus) and the systems monitor their activities while taking the exam. As part of the COVID response to online learning our campus adopted this program. We utilized the software to monitor Emergency Medical Technician students take their midterm and final exams.

Questions?

Canvas Proctorio and Studio

PROCTORIO

As discussed above, Proctorio is part of the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS). This educational platform is designed to monitor assessment integrity of students during quizzes and exams. Students will need access to hardware such as tablets, laptops, and desktops in order to access the app in Canvas. They cannot use their cell phones! This software gives you analytics when the assessment has concluded on individual students and the entire class. Proctorio can only be used on assessment you design in the Canvas system. If you are using assessment through a secondary site outside of the Canvas LMS you will need to contact the publisher on what software they utilize for exam integrity or consider the ProctorU software discussed below.

Before students take the exam they will need to download the software on to their personal computer. I recommend doing this in advance and offering a syllabus quiz to assess accessibility and any issues the students may have with Proctorio. Some of the common issues with student set up that we have experienced are:

  • Students try and set up on cell phones
  • Students do not have compatible hardware or lack access to the necessary hardware
  • Students do not have the Wifi capability to support the program
  • Students do not have a camera on their computer

Click on the picture of the link below to access additional information about the Proctorio system.

ABOUT PROCTORIO

PROCTORU

This system allows instructors a way to monitor student activity during quizzes, midterms, and finals. This product is offered by an outside vendor and is not part of the Canvas LMS system. Watch the video below to gain an understanding of the ProctorU system. This system is an added cost for most campuses. It is not part of the Canvas system and can cost per user. Speak with other faculty, department chairs, or your Dean to gain more insight into the budgetary cost of this system. This program works in a similar fashion as Proctorio. It gives faculty conducting remote testing a way to monitor student activity for suspicious behavior.

STUDIO

Like Proctorio, Studio is another Canvas based application that can enhance the content of your online, hybrid or face to face course (F2F). This system offers instructors a means to deliver course content in a video platform. Faculty can design course specific video using this technology. Studio offers three different option for video delivery. An instructor can:

  • Screen Record a Video
  • Webcam a Video
  • Upload a Video from Youtube (this option has restrictions)

ABOUT STUDIO

In the video below we will go over the basic set up and recording capabilities of the Canvas Studio system. You will be able to record , edit, and add quizzes to videos using this system. The major benefit of using Studio to perform course quizzes is that the student has to watch the informative video completely in order to complete the quiz and move on to other assignments. You can also add notes and commentary to videos using the Studio platform.

ASSIGNMENT FOR THIS SECTION

For this section you will create a studio video for your module with test questions. If you participated in the Canvas 101 module utilize the quiz you developed there to create your quiz for this assignment. If you did not participate in that module, don't worry, just find a quiz that you want to use from an existing class and create the Studio quiz with those questions. The quiz does not have to be a major undertaking; unless you want it to be. This is your opportunity to explore Studio and the potential if has for your class. The link below will take you to the assignment for this section and give you further instructions for creating your studio quiz. Once you have completed the Studio Quiz upload it the the assignment page and we will discuss it at our live Zoom meeting for this module. As always, if you have any questions regarding the assignment you can submit them to the discussion board or email me directly at lgreen@craftonhills.edu
