The ASCCC OERI Introduction to OER Certificate
The Academic Senate for California Community Colleges Open Educational Resources Initiative Links to an external site. (ASCCC OERI) encourages and supports professional development opportunities for current and future California Community College employees. The ASCCC OERI is now offering an Introduction to OER Certificate.
The certificate will provide an overview of OER fundamentals, providing participants with the foundational knowledge needed to be an effective OER advocate and the opportunity to collaborate with faculty working on a current OER project. Topics covered include open licensing, open pedagogy, accessibility, curation of resources, and research about how OER affects student success. Participants will be supported in their learning by live synchronous guidance from the ASCCC OERI.
This no-cost professional development opportunity will begin September 7th, 2020 and conclude November 20th, 2020. The first eight weeks consists of a self-paced Canvas course supported with weekly synchronous Zoom meetings for questions, answers, and discussion. Meeting times will be Mondays 2pm-3pm, Wednesdays 12:30-1:30pm, Thursdays 2:30pm-3:30pm, and additional days and times to be determined. Participants are encouraged to attend one live meeting per week but attendance is not required. The last three weeks includes a hands-on opportunity to participate in the development or improvement of an OER, employing the knowledge gained through course participation. At conclusion, participants will record and caption an openly licensed lightning talk or TedTalk style video summarizing their experience and what they have learned, which may be archived on the OERI website for future professional development.
Successful completion of the course assignments, contribution to OER development or improvement, participation in live sessions, and creating a concluding video are necessary to earn the ASCCC OERI Introduction to OER Certificate.
